  • Carlos V Studios | Napo moist forests

Napo moist forests The Napo moist forests ecoregion is centred around the Napo river watershed in westernmost Amazonia, covering parts of Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. The region is bounded on the west by the Andes Mountains, and extends east near the confluence of the Napo and Amazon rivers. It has been a place of natural colonization and counter-colonization of species coinciding with dramatic changes in temperature and humidity. These historic climatic fluctuations resulted in high rates of evolution and speciation, thereby rendering this area extremely diverse. Three main types of vegetation occur: terra firme forest, várzea forest, and igapó swamp forest. The upland terra firme forests are more diverse and taller with canopies reaching up to 50 m in height. The two other forest types are water-saturated and support a diverse flora that is adapted to the watery conditions. These forests are among the richest in species biodiversity in the entire Amazon Basin, and rank among the most diverse in the world. Some 219 species of mammals and 649 species of birds are reported in the ecoregion, and it possesses the richest herpetofauna in the world. The Upper Amazon-Napo lowlands is an Endemic Bird Area. Several large protected areas are situated within the ecoregion. However, for the most part their administration suffers from insufficient funding, hunting, and deforestation resulting from expansion of settlement, colonization of the interior by peasant farmers, forest conversion into cattle pasture and plantations, petroleum operations, and construction of roads by oil companies. The whole Ecuadorian Amazon has been subject to oil and gas exploration and virtually all of the Napo riverine area in Ecuador is open for oil leasing. This excessive oil and gas exploration in the Ecuadorian Amazon has additionally resulted in the displacement of the indigenous peoples. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • Carlos V Studios | Northwestern Andean montane forests

Northwestern Andean montane forests The Northwestern Andean montane forests is an ecoregion on the western slope of the Andes mountains, in western Ecuador and Colombia. This ecoregion is part of the Northern Andean Montane Forests global ecoregion, in turn located within the tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests biome, in the neotropical realm. Both flora and fauna are highly diverse due to the effect of alternating glacial and inter-glacial periods, which created isolated pockets of warm and cool zones respectively, and the consequent formation of endemisms therein. Since the environment is hospitable to humans, the habitat has been drastically affected by farming and grazing since the Pre-Columbian era. The high biodiversity and the anthropic impact these forests possess qualify it as part of the tropical Andes biodiversity hotspot. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

  • Carlos V Studios | About me

About me Greetings! I introduce myself as Carlos Vermeersch, a biologist and translator of Spanish and Belgian heritage residing in the enchanting Canary Islands. My expertise consists in wildlife photography (both handheld and drone cameras) and scientific illustration (accredited by the Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología ). I have ventured into the realms of photogrammetry, forensic facial reconstruction (by the University of Burgos ), and map creation. I have worked for the City Hall of El Paso in the Canary Islands, providing them with scientific illustrations used for information boards for nature trails. I also have had the honour of creating scientific illustrations for the Museo de la Seda "Las Hilanderas" . Some of my photography is used in the Banco de Datos de Biodiversidad de Canarias (BDBC) , a database that collects information of all the known native flora and fauna of the Canary Islands, amounting to 22,000 species and subspecies. In July 2016, I began working for a Canarian airline magazine as a writer and photographer. My monthly articles, titled "Wild Canaries," explored the captivating wildlife of the islands. The positive reception, including praise from my university teachers, inspired me to share nature and history on my blog. Some of my articles gained a somewhat widespread attention, reaching esteemed palaeontologists. This encouraged me to take my blog to the next level, committing to it professionally and full-time. With gratitude, I intend to uncover the wonders of the Canaries and the world, sharing its beauty and stories with the world. When delving into the past to create my history-related content, I often turn to primary sources written in their original languages like Latin, Ancient Greek, Middle Persian and Arabic. For my nature-related content, I draw upon a combination of self-taught knowledge, university education, and field observations captured during my photographic trips. It is through this humble blend of sources and experiences that I seek to share my passion for history and nature with the world. Once again, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for gracing my virtual abode. Join me as we embark on a captivating exploration, where the wonders of wildlife and history converge.
